The value of a good credit rating

Identity theft is on the increase again. Added to that is the unsavoury fact that that, so many more people are having great problems with their debt burden.

That being the case, it's critical to take a look at your credit report so you can see where you stand in the eyes of the credit reporting agencies. Though you can request a free one by law in most western countries when you are denied credit, you may have to pay for them in other circumstances.

If you only check your credit once a year, you can settle for using a free report. You can only get it once a year however that may well be all that you require and for many people that is adequate. After all, if you are credit impaired then the last thing you need is yet more bills on your doorstep.

Most governments, under pressure from lobby groups, introduced free report legislation a few years ago.

If you haven't seen your credit status yet, you probably have a report in circulation regardless, because almost always when entering any sort of financial arrangement that requires finance approval, you will be checked out.

These free reports are usually generated on the basis of your last name. You do have to enter information to get the report though, which is in your own interest to keep your report away from preying eyes. Be prepared to be asked some touchy and even personal or embarrassing questions when seeking finance on some product or other.  For example, you may get questione  about old phone and electricity bills or perhaps cars you may have owned. This comes with the territory when seeking out your own credit history and profile. It's just the trade off when seeking access to your own online credit report.

If the free service isn't up to scratch or you can't get an online credit report once a year that is free, then you can pay a nominal amount for a service that allows you to view your report whenever you want and usually in far greater detail.

Sometimes your free online credit report is free by virtue of the fact that it's bundled together with some other service that you have paid for.

Paid credit reporting services allow you to check out your status and reports whenever you want. That way you can respond quickly if a problem arises and before it becomes a real threat to your financial life.

For someone who is concerned about identity theft, or is trying to repair their bad credit history to buy a property, furniture, electrical goods etc. Such major purchases always carry some form of credit check.

An online credit report isn't just a convenience or an ego trip but rather it represents your financial lifeline and should be taken very seriously as anyone who has been declined credit knows only to well.

If you haven’t checked your credit lately, it might be a good idea to do so, and you can easily do it by checking your online credit report. If you don’t understand what you are looking at when you open it, you can always research online about how to read them and what different things mean to you and your credit. If you find things that are not yours, you can have them fixed, though sometimes this takes a while. If you suspect identity theft, getting an online credit report should be your first port of call.

Always remember to keep your account password  safe and secure, make sure you keep it hard to fathom to a hacker and no matter how tough it is to work out it still pays to change it every so often so that only you have access to this personal and potentially powerful information.

We all start out with sound credit and keeping a healthy credit history without the need for credit repair is actually a financial asset as real as anything else. If you doubt that remember that even if you are approved despite a poor credit history, you will in all likelihood pay a few extra percentage points in the interest rate. This is to compensate the company lending you money, for their extra perceived risk in lending to you. That equates to real money out of your pocket so get a good credit rating and look after it.
